She takes care of fifteen children every day.

She washes their hands and wipes their noses and makes sure they eat their vegetables and models what deep breathing looks like when the four-year-old melts down at circle time. She reminds the parents at pickup to schedule the well-child visit. She fills out the incident reports. She stocks the classroom first aid kit.

She has not been to a doctor herself in three years.

Her mother died of a stroke at fifty-two. Her aunt of the same thing at forty-nine. Her grandmother had heart disease that nobody caught until it was too late. She is thirty-four. She has been telling herself for the last five years that she will get to it after the next payday, after the next stretch of overtime, after the next thing.

She has not gotten to it. She does not really know how to start.

HLTH-101: Introduction to Health is where she starts.

What This Course Actually Teaches

Over five weeks starting Sunday, August 23, 2026, HLTH-101 walks students through the actual, evidence-based practice of taking care of a human body  their own using Donatelle's Access to Health (16th ed.), the standard university-level health text.

Students learn to:

• Read their own risk factors honestly, family history, weight, blood pressure, stress, sleep, nutrition and understand which ones are theirs to change and which ones need a professional.

• Build a real Personal Wellness Plan as the course capstone a plan they walk out of the term already using, covering physical health, mental health, stress, sleep, nutrition, movement, and community.

• Understand health disparities why the women in her family died young, why access to care is not distributed equally, and what she can do about her own outcomes even inside a system that has not always worked for her.

• Learn mindfulness as a practical tool the research-backed kind, not the Instagram kind for managing stress in a job that never stops.

The final project is a Personal Wellness Plan she will still be using six months from now.

For Every Student in the AS Program

HLTH-101 is a General Education course required in the AS in Early Childhood Education and transferable into any accredited pathway. Five weeks, fully asynchronous online through Orbund, no prerequisites.

You need three credits toward your GE anyway. This is the one that gives you something you will still be using long after the transcript posts.
